Hi! I am Ashley Bryan-Summers, and I have taught every possible math course from 8th grade to AP Calculus since 2008.

I have a Master's degree in Mathematics from Mississippi College, and I currently teach at Warren Central High School in Vicksburg, MS in addition to my classes with UMHS. I love teaching online classes because of the flexibility it gives students to work on their own pace in the comfort of their own homes.

I am a mom/step-mom of 3 awesome kiddos and in my (very rare) spare time I love to cook, read, and make jewelry.

Course Description:

In this algebra course, students will learn how to solve problems by using variables to represent unknown quantities and then solving for those unknown quantities by writing equations and inequalities.

Grading Scale:

93 - 100% = A
85 - 92% = B
75 - 84% = C
70 - 74% = D
Below 69% = F

The grading format is as follows:

Unit homework (quizzes, assignments) 50%
Unit proctored tests: 30%
Final exam 20%

Additional Information:

In an Independent Study course, a student's reading comprehension and written communication skills become even more important than in traditional lecture courses because they are the student's primary means of receiving knowledge and demonstrating mastery of that knowledge. Accordingly, reading comprehension and written communication skills are necessary for success in this course.

Internet Access - You must have access to the Internet, preferably high speed, for the duration of this course. You'll need speakers or headphones and the download capacity to watch short videos.

You must get at least 80% on the Syllabus and Orientation Quiz for your lesson materials to appear.

Lessons: All of the course work will appear on the Lessons page as soon as you have achieved 80% or higher on the syllabus quiz in the Start Here area. You must complete the assignments in the order they appear. You may not skip quizzes, tests, or projects. Once you complete each final chapter assignment, the next chapter folder will appear. In other words, continuing on to the next folder is contingent on completing the ones before it.

Quizzes: Quizzes will take place at the end of each section. They will be completed online and will cover a small amount of the most recently completed material. You can see your attempt(s) by accessing the quiz as you did while taking it, then clicking the attempt and then the score.

Chapter Assignments: Essays and projects will be uploaded to Blackboard dropboxes. To submit your assignment, click on the title of the dropbox and choose the Browse My Computer button to navigate to your saved file and select it.

Practice Problems: Practice problems will follow every lesson. While they will not be collected, they are still considered mandatory coursework. Questions very similar to those in the practice problems will appear on the quizzes and tests.

Assignments: Throughout the course you will be asked to complete several small assignments that give you the opportunity to be creative and express your mathematical skills.

Tests: Proctored unit tests will be completed at the end of every unit (approximately 3 chapters) of material covered in the course. These tests will include all concepts covered thus far, with a major emphasis on the material in the most recently completed unit.

Final Exam: Upon completion of all unit tests, a comprehensive final exam will be given that covers all the material within the course. Essentially the final exam will be comprised of questions from each unit test. There is an ungraded final exam practice test to help you.
