Course Description

Training for camp counseling: programming; camp craft skills; survey of the field of camping. Prerequisite: Majors and minors only, or with instructor’s approval.

Course Objectives:

This course will provide students with opportunities to:

  • Investigate the history of camping and camp management.
  • Understand the varieties of camping available to participants.
  • Become familiar with equipment and supplies necessary for various styles of camping.
  • Understand the importance of natural resources to camping and mastering low-impact and environmentally sensitive camping techniques.
  • Become familiar with principles and procedures necessary for safe camping and camp management, and for managing risk in the outdoors.
  • Increase general knowledge of camp skills, techniques, and the natural history of the southeastern United States.
  • Become more familiar with professional organizations and advocacy groups in the areas of camping and outdoor recreation.
  • Develop an understanding of camp management, including fiscal management, marketing, risk management, staff management, and programming.

This course consists of 16 instructional modules, 3 major projects, and 2 proctored examinations

You must submit the lessons required to take the course exam(s). Lessons required but not submitted will receive a grade of zero. For the final exam, all coursework must be submitted and graded.
