Instructor Information:
Tracy Case Koslowski received a B.A. in Linguistics with minors in German and Russian, an M.A. in German, and an M.A. in TESL, all from the University of Mississippi. Her international experience includes a year abroad studying in Giessen, Germany; working as an English instructor for the “Allegria” troupe of Cirque du Soleil; graduate study in Klagenfurt, Austria; and teaching English at the Berufskolleg in Hilden, Germany.

Before becoming an instructor at UM in 2003, she spent three years teaching German at Pascagoula High School. In addition to teaching independent study German, Tracy is a full-time instructor in the University of Mississippi Intensive English Program.

Course Description

This is a 4-lesson independent study course in introductory German. Each lesson will take 2-3 weeks to complete, and each is followed by a proctored chapter exam that must be finished before progressing in the course.

This course will introduce you to basic grammar and vocabulary, including topics such as self-description, family, studies and leisure activities. This course will include speaking, listening, reading comprehension, and writing in German.

Course Objectives:

Objectives include (but are not limited to):

1. Greet, say farewell, and introduce yourself and others.
2. Describe people and talk about family.
3. Discuss studies and daily activities.
4. Talk about personal belongings.
5. Discuss abilities and basic emotions.
6. Grasp basic elements of German grammar.

Course Outline:

This course consists of 4 instructional modules (or lessons) and 4 proctored exams.

Grading:

GRADING SCALE:
90 - 100% = A
80 - 89% = B
70 - 79% = C
60 - 69% = D
Below 59% = F

FAILURE TO TAKE THE FINAL EXAM WILL RESULT IN FAILURE OF THE COURSE.

You must submit the lessons required to take the course exam(s). Lessons required but not submitted will receive a grade of zero. For the final exam, all coursework must be submitted and graded.
