Archaeological Field Session
Dates: May 27-June 25, 2019

Cost: $1000 plus tuition
Application Deadline: April 11, 2019
- Excavate a 14th century Native American Mississippian mound and village site.
- Assist in excavating portions of three houses, to look for evidence of shell bead production, food remains, and household relationships, and identify change over time at the site.
- Learn basic archaeological methods, including excavating, mapping, surveying, and artifact identification.
- Earn 6 hours of methods course credit, which is highly advised for students interested careers in archaeology, employment in private sector archaeology, or graduate school.

The program dates are May 28-June 25, 2019.
Location:
Pre-departure meeting will take place on the Oxford campus on May 27. Students will travel to Lee County, Virginia on May 28 and return home on June 25.
Students interested in learning how to do archaeology; students interested in archaeology as a career (field school is required); students needing 6 hours methods credit in anthropology. Students must be willing and able to work outside for long periods of time as well as work in group settings. Interested majors may include but are not limited to: Anthropology, History, Geology, and Southern Studies
Course fee is $1000. Included in the course fee are housing and select group meals. Excluded from the cost are the Study USA application fee, tuition, travel/airfare, and personal spending money.
Students should plan to be on the Oxford campus by May 27 and make their own travel arrangements to Lee County. If travel by air, students should arrive to Knoxville, Tennessee or Lexington, Kentucky, and arrange to rent a car to get to the site. The instructor can facilitate ride sharing.
