  • Visit New York City — home to over 100 museums — to explore world famous institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, and the American Museum of Natural History
  • Learn to identify defining characteristics of art, historical, memorial, heritage, and science museums and how they differ
  • Evaluate an exhibition by analyzing its public programming to achieve educational goals
  • Analyze museums from a visitor prospective and examine ways museums court membership and financial support
  • Learn about the diverse architectural styles of museums and their reflection on museum missions

Dates: Students will meet in New York on Sunday, May 22. They will spend five nights in NYC, returning on Friday, May 27.

Locations: Students will spend six days in New York visiting museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, American Museum of Natural History, The Guggenheim, 9/11 Memorial Museum, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Tenement Museum, Museum of Jewish Heritage, MOMA, National Museum of the American Indian, and The New Museum.

This program is offered as part of the Museum Studies Minor and may be of interest to students from Art and Art History, Anthropology and Sociology, Classics, History, and Southern Studies. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Students will make their own travel arrangements to and from New York. Shared accommodations will be provided on site. Airfare can be billed to student bursar accounts by making arrangements through Amber Gregory at Travel Leaders, agregory@travelleaders.com, or 901-507-8463.

The Study USA program fee is $1,350 plus tuition. Included in the program fee are accommodation, admission to the museums, and select group meals. Excluded from the program fee are tuition, most meals, airport transportation, airfare, and personal spending money.
