  • Learn how gender impacted the lives and jobs of Americans before, during, and after World War II.
  • Explore the ways traditional women’s roles were repurposed to support the war.
  • Articulate the role of propaganda in recruiting women to contribute to the war effort.
  • Discuss the impact of participation by minorities in WWII and how it led directly to the movements of the 50s and 60s.
  • Visit the National World War II Museum in New Orleans and spend a day exploring its exhibits.
  • Visit the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in Jackson for a different lens to view the catalyst of the war years.

Students will attend class on campus from May 28-June 4 and again on June 10, with final presentations on June 12. Students will meet in New Orleans on Wednesday, June 5. They will spend three nights in New Orleans, traveling to Jackson, MS on Saturday, June 8 and returning to Oxford on June 9.

This course may interest students in the humanities and social sciences (particularly history, sociology, gender studies, English, African American studies, journalism, IMC, writing, and education) as well as students pursuing a degree in general studies.

Students in the following organizations may also be interested in this course: UM Pride Network, UM NAACP, RASA, Students Against Social Injustice, FEMISS, and students affiliated with the Center for Inclusion & Cross-Cultural Engagement.

There are no prerequisites to register for G St 395.

Students will have class meetings in Oxford prior to traveling to New Orleans, LA. Students will be in New Orleans for 4 days prior to traveling to Jackson, MS for the final class visit.

Students will make their own travel arrangements to and from New Orleans, returning to Oxford by way of Jackson, MS. Shared hotel accommodations will be provided in both New Orleans and Jackson.

$1150 plus tuition. Included in the program fee are accommodations, entrance to museums and other class activities, select group meals, and group ground transportation in New Orleans. Tuition, transportation to/from New Orleans, most meals, and personal spending money are excluded from the program fee.

Once accepted to a program, the student accepts financial responsibility for Study USA program fees and tuition and must adhere to the application and withdrawal policy.
