Hawaiian STEAM: Microbes, Symbiosis, and Culture

- Gain a deeper understanding of microbes, scientific research, and scientific advancement.
- Conduct sampling for microbes from lichens, plants, and seaweeds in this exotic environment.
- Gain hands on experience processing samples for the cultivation and analysis of microbial communities.
- On the Big Island, students will get the opportunity to visit a working tea plantation and explore the drastically different landscapes of the island.
- On Oahu, students will visit world famous Kualoa Ranch and learn about Hawaii’s intersection of history, culture, tradition, and Hollywood.
Students will meet on the Oxford campus prior to departure in December. The instructors will determine time and location. The December class meeting is required. Students MUST be able to participate in two days of in-person classwork in Oxford on Friday, December 9th (1-5pm), and Saturday, December 10th (9am-4pm), 2022.
The program dates on location in Hawaii are Jan 2-14, 2023.
This course may interest Environmental Science, Biology, Pharmacy, Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Ocean Sciences students. To register in BISC 380, students must have completed BISC 160, 161, 162, or 163 for credit or have instructor approval. There are no prerequisites for ENVS 399.
Flight and program-related ground transportation costs are included in the Study USA course fee. Students are responsible for ground transportation costs during personal time (i.e. taxi, bus, or Uber outside of class activities). Flights will leave early morning from Memphis International Airport on January 2, 2023. Students will depart Hawaii on January 14, 2023, and arrive back in Memphis on January 15.
The program fee is $3,200. Included in the fee are airfare, housing, group ground transportation, some group meals, and field site admission fees. Excluded from the program fee are tuition, most meals, and personal spending money.
