  • Visit several locations of biological importance in Southern Appalachia such as:
  • Learn principles of conservation biology and natural resource management.
  • Address questions about prioritization and protection of endemic species, sustainable use, and harvesting of native species.
  • Conduct biodiversity surveys and curate collected data.
  • Consider the intersection of traditional ecological knowledge and modern science.

Students will have class in Oxford on May 13-14 & May 23-24 and travel through Southern Appalachia (Talladega National Forest; Fort Mountain State Park; Great Smoky Mountains National Park; Mammoth Cave National Park) from May 15-22.

Students will travel by van from Oxford to all study sites. All ground transportation in the course will be provided.

This course is open to all majors. Students seeking Biology credit should have completed BISC 160, 161, 162, and 163 before the course begins and should register for BISC 380 (or BISC 491, which is available for students who have already taken BISC 380, and who wish to conduct a supervised independent research project). Other students should sign up for ENVS 399, for which there are no prerequisites, and which can be counted toward an Environmental Studies minor.

Students seeking Biology credit should have completed BISC 160, 161, 162, and 163.

Instructor approval for ENVS 399.

$1325 plus tuition. Included in the program fee are housing, ground transportation, site admissions, and select group meals. Tuition, some meals, and personal spending money are excluded from the program fee.

Once accepted to a program, the student accepts financial responsibility for Study USA program fees and tuition and must adhere to the application and withdrawal policy.

Outreach Study USA Scholarship
The Outreach Study USA Scholarship supports student participation in Study USA courses. Scholarship awards range from $500 to $750 and are designed to help offset the additional expenses associated with academic travel.

Carolyn Ellis Staton Study USA Scholarship
The Carolyn Ellis Staton Study USA Scholarship was established to increase access to unique experiential learning programs. These scholarships will help to make engaging educational travel opportunities more accessible to students with financial need. Scholarship awards range from $250 to $750 and are designed to help offset the additional expenses associated with academic travel.
