Course Description:

TEXTBOOK

Required Textbook:

All page numbers referenced in the units, unless otherwise specified, refer to Edith Hamilton’s Mythology, a book you will need to acquire for this course. I have also tried to list the headings that accompany the page numbers in case you do not have the exact same edition of Hamilton’s book as I am using.

It is the student's responsibility to order his or her textbook. Online textbook retailers such as Amazon.com, ABEbooks.com, or Half.com usually provide used textbooks at economical prices.

You must make sure you are ordering the exact book required in this syllabus.

Course Objectives include (but are not limited to):

Welcome to this course! This course is a foundational step to building a framework of cultural literacy. You might even find a lesson or two to apply to your own life!
Upon completion, you will:

    1. Have a working knowledge of the primary players and places and events in Greek and Roman mythology
    2. Have a deeper understanding of the ways in which we humans sought to explain our world around us before scientific experimentation on the level we have today was possible
    3. Discover that whether it is the 5th century BC or present-day, human beings still have many of the same characteristic flaws and struggles

Course Outline:

You will find 10 units that comprise this course, and each unit will be set up in the same basic format. Most units are designed to take approximately one week to complete, and each unit will have a Unit To Do List as the top page when you click on the unit folder. On this page, you will find a checklist of assignments and directions that will help you to complete the unit. Use this as your guide to the kinds of materials and assignments (discussions, dropbox assignments, quizzes, etc.) you will be asked to participate in for that unit. This is one proctored final exam in the course.
