Course Description:

Music is part of everyday lives and reflects the spirit of our human condition. To know and understand music, we distinguish and identify cultures on local and global levels. This course will provide students with an aesthetic and historical perspective of music, covering a variety of styles and developments from the Middle Ages through the Twentieth-First Century. Students will acquire basic knowledge and listening skills, making future music experiences more informed and satisfying.

Textbook:

For this course, you will not need to order a textbook. All reading material is found in each unit.

Course Objectives include (but are not limited to):

  • Investigate form in music and how this involves the other elements of music.
  • Examine the relationship between popular music and pop music.
  • Examine what musical instruments were used in ancient times.
  • Analyze the changes that this period made to Western music.
  • Trace the development of music during the Classical Era.

Course Outline:

This course consists of 8 instructional modules (or units). NOTE: you must pass the Syllabus and Orientation Quiz for the course materials to appear on the Lessons page.

Grading Scale:

93 - 100% = A
85 - 92% = B
75 - 84% = C
70 - 74% = D
Below 69% = F

The grading format is as follows:

Minor Grades: 50% (Homework) 
Major Grades: 30% (Quizzes)
Exams: 20% (Mid-Term and Final)
