Instructor Information:

Gail Davis has taught with the UM-ISHS since 2014. She also teaches Earth and Space Science during Summer Academy. In addition to her work at Ole Miss, Ms. Davis teaches Science and Math at Lafayette County School District.

Ms. Davis received her undergraduate degree from The University of Mississippi and her Master of Science in Geosciences from Mississippi State.

Course Description:

Earth and Space Science is an introductory course that includes topics in geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy. Some of the topics that will be addressed include weathering, plate tectonics, fossils, atmospheric phenomena, the water cycle, and planetary and star systems.

Course Objectives include (but are not limited to):

  • Apply inquiry-based and problem-solving processes and skills to scientific investigations.
  • Develop an understanding of the history and evolution of the universe and Earth.
  • Discuss factors which are used to explain the geological history of the Earth.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Earth systems relating to weather and climate.
  • Apply and understanding of ecological factors to explain relationships between Earth systems.

Course Outline:

This course consists of 20 instructional modules (or lessons). Each module has a progress test that must be scheduled in advance and taken in your proctor's presence.
