Instructor Information:

Mrs. Bourne is a graduate of William Carey University and the University of Southern Mississippi. She holds a Mississippi Educator License with endorsements in Business, English, Mathematics, General Science, Social Studies, Psychology, AP World History, Counseling, and Administration.

Prior to accepting her current position as Administrator of The University of Mississippi High School, she served as the Guidance Counselor at South Pontotoc High School, and District Data and Guidance Coordinator at the Pontotoc City School District.

Course Description:

The Advanced World Geography course introduces students to the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of Earth's surface.  Students learn to employ spatial concepts and landscape analysis to examine human socioeconomic organization and environmental consequences.  They also learn about the methods and tools geographers use in their research and applications.

Course Objectives:

Objectives include (but are not limited to):

  • Describe and explain the world using spatial terms, concepts, and thinking and employing maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies.
  • Appraise the nature, origins, evolution, and meaning of places.
  • Determine how regions are used to describe the organization of the Earth's surface.
  • Compare and contrast geographic patterns in the environment that result from the processes of Earth's physical systems.
  • Evaluate the characteristics and processes of human population and migration on Earth.
  • Examine the characteristics and development of culture.
  • Explain the patterns and networks of economic interdependence on Earth's surface.
  • Analyze the patterns of human settlements and explain their development and operation.
  • Describe and analyze boundaries and political entities and the cooperation and conflicts that occur among them.
  • Explain how human actions modify the physical environment.
  • Explain how human systems develop in response to physical environmental conditions.
  • Evaluate the concept of natural resources and the changes in the spatial distribution, quantity, and quality of resources through time and location.

Below 69% = F

The grading format is as follows:

Minor Grades: 50% (Discussions, Journals, Unit Assignments, and Map Assignments) 
Major Grades: 30% (Chapter Quizzes, Unit Tests, and Geography Project)
Final Exam: 20%
