Biomedical Ethics (Honors)

Students will:

  • Participate in an intense, two-week course exploring ethical issues in contemporary health care.
  • Learn about basic ethical theories and principles at work in making ethical decisions in health care.
  • Examine current topics in health care, such as end-of-life decisions, the patient/doctor relationship, genetics, health care reform, and the ethics of research in and use of emerging biotechnologies.
  • Meet with senior health policy specialists on Capitol Hill to develop a basic understanding of current topics in health care ethics by questioning experts directly.
  • Visit the National Institutes of Health, the American College of Medical Genetics, and other organizations dealing with health care-related policy, advocacy, and oversight.

Location:

Oxford, MS, and Washington, DC

Who should go?

Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College Scholars and non-honors students with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Instructor approval required. This course may interest students studying pre-med, biology, pre-law, pharmacy, public policy leadership, philosophy, or political science.

Dates:

Students will meet on the Oxford campus from January 3-6, 2017 and in Washington, DC from January 8-14, 2017.

Travel:

Students will make their own travel arrangements to and from Washington, DC and meet with the group at the hotel at a designated time. The group will stay at the Capitol Hill Hotel, or similar accommodations.

Costs:

$1,245 plus tuition. Included in the cost are housing, a group dinner, site admission fees, and tour fees. Study USA application fee, tuition, airfare, most meals, ground transportation, and personal spending money are excluded from the course fee.
