Ireland: 100th Anniversary of “The Troubles”

Location: Dublin, Republic of Ireland, and Belfast, Northern Ireland
Leader:
Dr. Carrie Smith, Instructional Assistant Professor of Psychology
Cost: $2,200

Travel smarter with the Academic Traveler and journey to the Emerald Isle and Northern Ireland to explore the fascinating history of “The “Troubles.” The Troubles is a euphemism commonly used in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to reference the violent political Anglo-Irish War, or the War of Independence (1916-1921). You will get a first hand look at such important sites as Kilmainham Gaol, Derry/Londonderry, and Glasnevin Cemetary, and explore the deeper psychological implications of this turbulent period with University of Mississippi Carrie Smith.

Travelers will:

  • Stay in the Gresham Hotel, one of the oldest in Dublin, actually destroyed in 1922 in the Irish Civil War and then rebuilt, and the Europa Hotel in Belfast. “Heralded” as the most bombed hotel in Europe, the Europa sustained considerable damage during the Troubles, although it remained open throughout, frequently housing reporters and claiming “we never close.”
  • Tour the National Museum in Dublin
  • Explore the Kilmainham Gaol, the jail that housed those responsible for the 1916 Uprising
  • Visit Glasnevin Cemetary, final resting place for many involved in the early quest for Irish Independence (e.g., Michael Collins)
  • Tour the Ulster Museum and the Museum of Free Derry in Belfast
  • Visit the Murals, Peace Bridge, Guildhall, etc.
  • Explore Derry/Londonderry, site of “Bloody Sunday,” the opening fire by the British Military on demonstrators

Included in the program cost:

  • Pre-departure educational material
  • Accommodations at the Gresham and Europa Hotels
  • Group museum admissions and tour fees
  • Breakfasts and welcome and farewell dinners (Old Storehouse Restaurant, Dublin, and the MAZE Restaurant, Belfast)
  • Ground transportation while in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland

Excluded from the program cost:
