Program Overview

The Lott Leadership Institute for Rising Ninth Graders is a unique summer experience designed to help students make a successful transition into high school while developing the leadership and critical thinking skills needed to become active, engaged citizens. Through a partnership between the University of Mississippi's Trent Lott Leadership Institute and the Division of Outreach, the program introduces participants to the importance of leadership, service, and civic responsibility.

Throughout the program, students explore how government decisions affect individuals, communities, and society as a whole. Through interactive discussions, hands-on classes, and real-world learning opportunities led by experienced practitioners and community leaders, participants develop the skills needed to think critically, communicate effectively, and lead with confidence.

A key component of the program is a full-day community exploration experience, where students engage directly with local leaders and government officials while applying concepts learned in the classroom through a meaningful community service project. These experiences help students gain a deeper understanding of civic engagement and the impact they can make in their own communities.

Beyond the academic experience, students participate in evening and weekend activities focused on career exploration, wellness, and cultural enrichment. By combining leadership development, civic learning, and community engagement, the program empowers students to enter high school ready to lead, serve, and make a positive difference.
