Brief Description:

Educators across the country are grappling with an unprecedented set of circumstances as they welcome students and adults back to school. We face the layered impact of schools’ closures (e.g., loss of school-based relationships, routines, and learning); COVID-19 (e.g., on health, isolation, stress, and trauma); economic crisis (e.g., unemployment, impact on school budgets), and racial inequities exacerbated by the pandemic and amplified by the nationwide mobilization for racial justice.

At the heart of this complex process is attending to the academic, social and emotional development; physical and mental health; cognitive development; and overall well-being of all students and adults in holistic ways that do not put these concerns in competition with one another. Educators will focus on transformative learning experiences that cultivate the social, emotional, and academic competencies needed to contribute to a caring, thriving, and just society.

Participants in this 2-day training will engage in interactive collaborative activities that focus on Social Emotional Learning.  The participant will be provided guidance as they consider data, develop strategies, and implement a plan for their class or school to improve student outcomes.

Upon completion of this training the participants will be able to:

  • Establish SEL activities in an organized plan as an integral component of the academic mission of the school.
  • Ensure every student has equitable access to Social Emotional Learning.
  • Identify and deliver the knowledge and skills students should acquire from a Social Emotional Learning plan.
  • Ensure that the SEL plan is comprehensive in design and delivered systemically to all students.
  • Increase knowledge of the Social Emotional Learning national curriculum.
  • Collaboratively share strategies for implementation for Social Emotional Learning.
