Application Process

What are the basic requirements to apply?

To apply, you must

  • be a degree-seeking University of Mississippi student. Rising juniors, seniors, recent-graduates, and graduate students can participate.
  • have a minimum of a 2.75 GPA.

What does the online application include?

A complete application includes:

  • Resume: A 1- or 2-page resume that highlights your education and experience
  • Cover Letter: A 1-page cover letter addressed to the Internship Experience in appropriate formal letter format. Your letter should include:
    • The city in which you are applying (Atlanta, New York, or Washington, DC)
    • Specific academic and career goals and how they are related
    • Personal and professional skills you hope to enhance and/or develop with an internship
    • Tangible skills that make you a competitive internship candidate
  • References: Contact information for 3 references, one from your advisor or a facultymember, and two from former employers.

What’s the application process like for IE?

Prospective participants must submit an on-line application, which includes a resume, cover letter, and names of 3 professional references. Students who meet minimum qualifications will be offered an interview with IE staff to discuss potential internships, career goals, and academic interests. Offers of acceptance are made to students who:

  • Meet IE program requirements
  • Can talk intelligently about prior work, volunteer, and/or leadership experience and how they relate to prospective internships
  • Are motivated, reliable, adaptable, and possess strong written and oral communication skills
  • Can take direction and advice from constructive criticism during the application and interview process
