How long is an enrollment in effect?
A high school independent study course enrollment covers a period of one year from the date the enrollment is processed by UM-ISHS. Supervisors are notified by mail approximately 90 days before a student’s enrollment expires. Students enrolled in sequential courses (e.g., American History 1 and 2) have one year from the date they complete the first semester to complete the second semester.

May students extend their course enrollments?
Yes, students may extend their enrollment in a course for one additional year by submitting a written request and a $35 extension fee within 30 days after the course expiration date. The extension will be calculated from the actual expiration date of the original enrollment.

Is there anything else I need to do to enroll?
Yes, if you are enrolling in a UM-ISHS course, you need to identify a supervisor/proctor. Parents may not serve as supervisors/proctors. Local supervisors/proctors are responsible for maintaining test security, establishing testing conditions, proctoring tests, and submitting completed tests to UM-ISHS when necessary. Parents, supervisors, and other individuals connected to the student play a significant role in helping the student succeed by providing encouragement and showing a sincere interest in the student’s work.

How do I select a supervisor/proctor?
The most acceptable choice for a supervisor or proctor is a person currently employed at any level as an educator (elementary, secondary, or postsecondary). The person could be a teacher, counselor, administrator, or extension educator. Other acceptable choices include head
librarians or local clergy. Military families may use base education officers, chaplains, and superior commissioned officers. Families living overseas may use embassy or consulate officials or other approved nonfamily members. For more information on selecting a supervisor, contact us at (662) 915-1296.

Do supervisors/proctors have to be approved?
Yes, a local school official and/or the UM-Independent Study High School administration must approve supervisors and proctors. Supervisors of UM-Independent Study High School diploma students only need to be approved by UM-ISHS’s administration. For more specific information relating to supervisors and proctors, please contact UM-ISHS.
