The University of Mississippi High School History Day Competition

Sponsored by the Office of High School Academic Competitions and Pre-College Programs, and the University of Mississippi Department of History.

There is no entry fee and all high school students are welcome to compete. Besides the history exam(which is required of all participants), there will be five other competitions this year: the Team Brain Bowl, Research Paper, Display/Poster, Video Presentation, and Computer Project. Students are encouraged to enter more than one competition but all students will compete in the exam competition. All competing students must be in the ninth, tenth, eleventh, or twelfth grade.

Fees

All participating students are required to pay a $5 fee that will cover the cost of a 2012 UM History Day T-shirt and lunch.

Themes

The theme for the 2012 University of Mississippi History Day Competition is the Civil War. All Research Papers, Displays/Posters, Video Presentations and Media/Computer Projects MUST adhere to the 2012 History Day theme. Enntries may include but are not limited to the following aspects of the Civil War:

  • Turning Points
  • Impact
  • Role of Women
  • Race
  • Battles
  • Politics

Registration

The deadline for registration is February 7, 2012. Please note that certain competitions require submission of materials prior to the date of the competition in order to be judged.

Each student participating in History Day must fill out a registration form. For those entering the Team Brain Bowl, a separate and additional registration form must be completed.

T-Shirt Design Competition

We welcome all History Day 2012 participants to submit a t-shirt design for this year's competition. All designs must have some type of historical reference or theme and will be judged and the winner will receive the satisfaction of having their artwork displayed on the official History Day 2012 t-shirt. Please submit all design entries by January 15, 2012. They may be mailed or emailed to the Office of Academic Competitions. Specifications for the artwork is as follows:

  • 2-3 color design
  • Up to 12-inch height and width back design (24 sq. inches)
  • Up to 3-inch height and width on front pocket design (9 sq. inches)

Spectators

School officials and non-competing students are also invited to attend as spectators, regardless of whether an entry has been made on behalf of the school. Additionally, students do not necessarily need to be accompanied by a school official in order to compete, but all students must be accompanied by an adult.
