History Day Competitions

About

The University of Mississippi History Day, sponsored by the Division of Outreach, Office of Pre-College Programs and the University of Mississippi Department of History, is an annual day of competition for the state of Mississippi and neighboring schools in the Alabama, Arkansas, and Tennessee areas.

History Day consists of a history exam and multiple competitions, all revolving around a central theme. The competitions offered include:
  • Brain Bowl
  • Display/Poster
  • Research Paper

Change to The 2016 History Day theme is “Civil Rights in the South”. All projects must adhere to the theme for consideration.

General Information:

History Day registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will end at 9:00 a.m. in the lobby of Lamar Hall. All schools and teams must check-in at the registration table before competing. Displays and posters will be available for setup from 9:00 to 9:25 a.m. Opening ceremonies will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m.

The mandatory History Day exam will be administered at 10:00 a.m. After the exam, participants with displays will stay from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to answer judges’ questions. Additional activities will be available for those not participating in this part of the competition.

The History Day Brain Bowl tournament will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m. Closing and award ceremonies will take place as soon as the Brain Brawl has ended, approximately 3:30 p.m.

Competition registration:

Brain Bowl team registration - Please register each team using a separate registration form.

Display/Poster registration - deadline of registration is February 5, 2016. Projects will be displayed on February 20, 2016.

Research Paper registration - deadline of submission is February 5, 2016

Schedule:

Registration - 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. (in the lobby of Lamar Hall)

Display/ Poster Set-up - 9:00 to 9:25 a.m.

Opening Ceremonies - 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. (Lamar 129)

History Day Exam - 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Judging of Displays/Posters - 11:00 to 11:30 a.m.

Lunch - 11:30 to 12:30 p.m.

History Day Brain Bowl - 12:30 to 3:10 (approx. end time)

History Day Campus Guide:

The Lyceum is the center of the Ole Miss campus (building #1). It faces the Circle, and is the western end of University Avenue. History Day will take place in a couple buildings within easy walking distance of the Lyceum. Saturday parking is available around the Circle and in other locations on the campus.

History Day Headquarters will be located in Lamar Hall. The tournament director’s cell phone number on tournament day, should you get lost or otherwise need to contact him, will be 662-466-1622.

Directions:

FROM MEMPHIS, TN, VIA I-55

From Memphis, Tennessee, take I-55 for 63 miles.

Take the Batesville/Oxford exit off I-55. Merge onto MS-6 and proceed east toward Oxford, Mississippi, for 26 miles.

Once in Oxford, take the third exit, Old Taylor Road, onto campus.

FROM MEMPHIS, TN, VIA HWY 78

From Memphis, Tennessee, take US-78 East for 52 miles.

Exit US-78 at the Holly Springs/Oxford exit.

From Holly Springs, take MS-& South for 31 miles.

Once in Oxford, take the fourth exit onto MS-6 and proceed west.

Take the second exit, Old Taylor Road, onto campus

FROM JACKSON, MS

From Jackson, Mississippi, take I-55 North for 150 miles.

Take Batesville/Oxford exit off I-55. Proceed east on MS-6 toward Oxford, Mississippi, for 26 miles.

Once in Oxford, take the third exit, Old Taylor Road, onto campus.

FROM TUPELO, MS

From Tupelo, Mississippi, take MS-6 West for 53 miles.

Once in Oxford, take the fifth exit, Old Taylor Road, onto campus.

FROM OLD TAYLOR ROAD

Take the roundabout toward campus, continuing to University Avenue.

Turn left at the three-way stop into campus.

For All-American Drive, take a left turn at the four-way stop.

For Circle Drive, continue straight at the four-way stop.

For Grove Loop, take a right turn at the four-way stop.
