Teacher Mentoring Program

The University of Mississippi Writing Project in partnership with the University of Mississippi School of Education is offering a mentoring program with a focus on writing for teachers in grades K-12.  Although sessions target teachers in their 1st -3rd years of teaching, the sessions are open to any teachers who simply want more focused instruction in the teaching of writing.  These workshops will provide an opportunity for teachers to learn current best writing practices in a series of instructional and interactive sessions.

During the eight sessions held in the 2008-2009 academic year, teachers will have the opportunity to critique and discuss their own writing instructional practices as they learn ways to implement new strategies.  Sessions will include presentations on special topics related to writing at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.  All presenters and mentors are University of Mississippi Writing Project teacher consultants and experienced writing teachers currently in the classroom.

Participants will attend eight sessions from 4:30-6:30 on Tuesday afternoons at The University of Mississippi campus in Oxford.  The cost is $250 per participant.  Fees include eight sessions, 1.2 CEUs, professional reading selections, and a pedagogical-based text for the teachers’ specific grade level.

What are teachers saying about our mentoring sessions?

“Wow! I learned several techniques on how to build community. Many of these things I can take back to the classroom next week.”
“I have been preparing for the state writing assessment for four years and hating every minute of it. This method has enabled me to empower my students to do the hard part and I can enjoy the ride”
“Looking forward to the next three sessions! This is great. I can’t wait to share ideas with the rest of my faculty members.”
