Wintersession is a sweet deal.

You can:

  • Take a course needed to complete your degree.
  • Retake a course if necessary.
  • Do domestic study somewhere in the US for course credit with Study USA.
  • Carry a lighter course load in the spring.
  • Concentrate on only one subject.
  • Get ahead or catch up.

Wintersession

is an academic term that takes place in early January and consists of 10 days of class meetings plus a final exam. It is designed to offer Ole Miss students the opportunity to earn up to three hours of academic credit toward the completion of their degrees during a portion of the five week break between the fall and spring semesters.

For more information, please visit Admissions, Financial Aid, the Registrar, or contact us at (662) 915-7036 or osw@olemiss.edu.

The Course Schedule page lists all of the Wintersession courses that will be offered on the Oxford campus. For the most up-to-date information on courses, however, please consult the Course Schedule on myOleMiss.

Why should I take a Wintersession class?

You will have the opportunity to take a course needed to complete your degree or to retake a course if necessary. There will be opportunities for internships, studying abroad, and domestic study with Study USA for course credit. If you know that you will be taking some particularly demanding courses during the spring, Wintersession could be the solution to a lighter course load or provide the opportunity to concentrate on only one subject. You can also get ahead or catch up by taking a course during Wintersession.

What kind of courses can I take?

Check out the academic calendar for Wintersession, as well as the list of all of the courses that are currently scheduled to be offered. Courses are listed by school and department. Because details about a particular course may change, you can find the most current information on Wintersession courses by consulting the Course Schedule on myOleMiss.

How do Wintersession classes work?

Each Wintersession 2016 course will meet for approximately three hours and thirty minutes each day for ten days between Monday, January 4 and Friday, January 15. Final exams are scheduled for Saturday, January 16, 2016.

How much do Wintersession classes cost?

Mississippi resident tuition is the same as that of any other comparable course taken during the fall or spring. Non-resident tuition, however, is significantly lower than in the fall and spring semesters, making Wintersession a bargain for out-of-state students. Click here to visit the Office of the Bursar web page for current tuition rates. Check the UM tuition estimator to estimate costs.

Do I have to pay anything extra to stay in campus housing?

No. If you have already paid for your room in one of the on-campus housing facilities for the academic year, you do not have to pay anything extra to stay in your room during Wintersession. See the Student Housing website for more information.

What is the housing schedule for Wintersession?

Our halls reopen after winter break on January 2 at noon so students who are taking wintersession classes can return to campus the day before classes start. For more information visit the UM housing website.

How do I sign up for a Wintersession class?

Currently enrolled students may register for classes beginning with the Priority Registration period that starts in late October. The exception to this date is the Wintersession Study USA program that has set an earlier deadline. Click here for more information about enrolling in Study USA.

What if I need to withdraw from my course?

You may withdraw from Wintersession classes on the myOleMiss web site in the same way that you would withdraw from classes in the spring and fall. See the Wintersession academic calendar for withdrawal deadlines.

What happens if Ole Miss closes due to bad weather (ice or snow)?

State law requires that three credit hour courses meet a certain amount of time. If one day of class is missed due to bad weather, extra time may be added to the remaining days of the Wintersession. However, if more than one day is missed, it may be necessary for classes to meet on a Saturday. All decisions about closing the university due to bad weather and about making up any time that is lost will be made by the Provost. Students are encouraged to make their plans for January in the awareness that make-up days may be required.

Is financial aid available during Wintersession?

The Wintersession is considered part of the nine month school year, therefore some financial aid may be available. Each student's individual financial aid package is different. For that reason, our office recommends that you contact the Office of Financial Aid to review your own particular financial aid package in order to determine what may be available to you.

What if I have more questions?

The Wintersession program is administered by the Office of Summer School within the Division of Outreach and Continuing Education. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Contact information is provided at the bottom of this page.
