Where Can I Intern?

Note to Students:  This is only a partial list of the many internship opportunities that are available in Washington.  There are many other options in each of these categories, so don’t limit yourself just to those listed below.  Be sure to consult with the faculty and staff of the Lott Leadership Institute at UM  to identify additional opportunities in your areas of interest. This page contains links to websites not under the control of the University of Mississippi; the University is not responsible for their contents.

All of the listed agencies may not be available during the Spring 2008 Semester. Most applications are due months in advance, and some agencies only allow graduate level students or highly skilled/experienced students to intern in their divisions.

Congressional Offices

Many employers in politics, government, lobbying, consulting, nonprofit management (domestic and international), among others, consider “Hill experience” a must for entry-level hires.  Working in Congress is a great way to learn about politics and policymaking in Washington.  It’s easy to find out how to apply to individual offices as Senators and Representatives include internship application information on their websites.  For Senators, go to www.senate.gov.  For Representatives, go to www.house.gov .  House members like to employ interns who live in their home districts.  If you don’t know the name of your local Representative, type in your zip code at www.house.gov  to find out.  If you are a strong Republican or Democrat, it’s best to pick offices of your same party.
