Instructor Information:

I am Mrs. Tabitha Dillard, and I will be your online instructor for this course. In addition, I teach high school English at Ingomar Attendance Center in New Albany, MS, where I have been for 11 years. I have a total of 16 years teaching experience.

I have a Master of Education Degree in English from the University of Mississippi. I also have a Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership. I have been happily married for 20 years and have two children: Lindsey and Josh.

Course Description:

This course will introduce students to the basics of film and theater productions. Students will learn about the basics of lighting, sound, wardrobe, and camerawork for both film and theater settings. The course also explores the history of film and theater and the influence that they have had on society. Students will analyze and critique an influential American film.

Required Textbook:

For this course you will not need to order a textbook. All reading material is found in each unit.

To complete the Lab assignments for Units 1, 2, and 3 you WILL need to rent or buy the movie Singin’ in the Rain starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds. You can find the movie on YouTube, Amazon, or other streaming services.

 

Course Objectives include (but are not limited to):

  • Identify what type(s) of films are used in film theory.
  • Describe why theater is a form of art.
  • Discuss how a camera can be moved and positioned to create different types of shots.
  • Describe the sound equipment used for film and theater productions.
  • Describe the processes of wardrobe and makeup design and creation.

Grading Scale:

93 - 100% = A
85 - 92% = B
75 - 84% = C
70 - 74% = D
Below 69% = F

The grading format is as follows:

Minor Grades: 50% (Quizzes, Text questions, Lab questions excluding units 11 and 12) 
Major Grades: 30% (Units 11 and 12 Lab questions, Midterm)
Final Exam: 20%
