Instructor Information:

I am a high school Business and Technology teacher at Oxford High School located in Oxford, Mississippi. I have a AAA teaching license issued by the Mississippi Department of Education.

I have been teaching for approximately 9 years and love every moment. I am currently a doctoral student pursing a PhD in Educational Technology.

I believe there are important learning moments for every student; every student is successful in their own unique way. Therefore, strive and be persistent and success is awaiting you.

Course Description:

Personal Finance allows the student to explore personal financial decision making. This course use helps students use skills in money management, record-keeping, banking, and investing. Students study the basic concepts involving economics, insurance, banking, credit, stocks and bonds, and other related topics through the use of business research tools and technological resources.

Activities include preparation of budgets, consumer skills, checking accounts, investment applications, comparison-shopping, advertising research, standard of living analysis, and comparison of housing options.

Course Objectives include (but are not limited to):

  1. Develop basic consumer awareness skills
  2. Define and explain productivity and discuss the various factors that affect productivity
  3. Using technology, apply budgeting techniques that involve planning for transportation, housing, insurance, and leisure expenses
  4. Identify banking services and prepare related documents
  5. Explore the process involved in securing credit and the effects of poor credit management
  6. Identify basic strategies for making money, stocks, bonds, terminology for stocks/bonds, and apply procedures in maintaining a fictitious stock market portfolio
  7. Develop a working knowledge of the types of insurance available
  8. Explore tax functions as related to personal finance and personal payroll

Grading Scale:

93 - 100% = A
85 - 92% = B
75 - 84% = C
70 - 74% = D
Below 69% = F

Remember, this course covers an entire semester of work or the equivalent of a classroom course lasting 15 weeks. That means that each module in this course equals nearly a week of course work and will require the same time and effort on your part. Do not expect to complete each module in a single study session.

The analysis of grades will consist of an accumulation of student activities to include but not limited to the following items:
