Thomas Grosskopf graduated from Ole Miss in 2010 with a BFA in Painting. He has been working as a professional artist for 15 years and teaches art at Lafayette High School as well as Ole Miss.

Course Description:

In the digital photography course, students will learn creative photographic skills and processes. Students will build a portfolio of work and explore the fields of photography and graphic arts.

Required Textbook:

For this course, you will not need to order a textbook. All reading material is found in each unit. However, students will need access to a digital camera. It is recommended that students have a DSLR camera, but a phone or other digital camera will be sufficient. Students will need the ability to upload their photographs for grading.

Course Objectives include (but are not limited to):

  • Examine the development of digital cameras.
  • Investigate how the “rules” can improve photographs.
  • Learn about the lighting equipment and accessories for studio photography.
  • Investigate how to create panoramic photographs.
  • Investigate how to take group photographs.

Course Outline:

This course consists of 10 instructional modules (or units). NOTE: you must pass the Syllabus and Orientation Quiz for the course materials to appear on the Lessons page.

PhotoBlog Project For every unit, post two of your favorite photographs. Blog Weeks 15-16
Final Portfolio As a part of your Final Exam grade, you will submit a portfolio of your photographs and a short essay. This portfolio, coupled with your proctored exam, will form your Final Exam grade for this course. Portfolio Week 17
  Post-test, Exit Survey The 10-minute Post-test is in the Final Exam folder and must be completed before the final exam will appear. To be completed before scheduling your final exam. Week 17
  Final Exam Proctored comprehensive exam covering Units 6-10. Complete all previous assignments before taking this exam. Any assignments not completed before the exam is taken will receive a grade of zero. Proctored test Week 18

Grading Scale:

93 - 100% = A
85 - 92% = B
75 - 84% = C
70 - 74% = D

The grading format is as follows:

Minor Grades: 50% (Lab Questions and Quizzes) 
Major Grades: 30% (Photography Assignments and PhotoBlog)
Final Exam: 20% (Portfolio and Proctored Final Exam)
