Instructor Information:

Hi and welcome to the The University of MississippiHigh School at Ole Miss and Botany. I am Dr. Sarah Trotman Lacy, and I will be your online instructor. Just to let you know a little about me, I have taught Biology I, Genetics, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Math, and Advanced Placement Biology for the Oxford School District for 39 years and retired in June 2011. I have a Bachelor of Science from Mississippi University for Women, a Master of Science and Ph. D. from the University of Mississippi. I have two sons, Brooks and Stuart; 1 grandson, Bennett; and four cats, Missy, Coco, Kitt and Isabell. I hope that you will enjoy this course.

Course Description:

Botany is a one semester (one half credit) course applying basic biological principles to the study of plants. Topics studied include morphological characteristics of each division and variation in their reproduction, taxonomy, and physiology. This course will cover 16 of the 27 chapters of the text, Introductory Botany: Plants, People, and The Environment by Linda Berg, 2nd Edition, 2008. Several chapters will be tested together.

I am here to help so when you have questions, just e-mail me. The approach to each lesson is to download the Objective Page and the Powerpoint slides. There are reading assignments and questions to be answered and these are listed on the objectives page. The questions will be answered online with each lesson. The competencies, printed in bold face type, are the part of the framework that is required to be taught to all students. Competencies do not have to be taught in the order presented in the framework. The competencies are presented in outline form for consistency and easy reference throughout the framework. Competencies are intentionally broad in order to allow school districts and teachers the flexibility to create a curriculum that meets the needs of their students. They may relate to one, many, or all of the science framework strands and may be combined and taught with other competencies throughout the school year. Competencies provide a guideline of on-going instruction, not isolated units, activities, or skills. The competencies are not intended to be a list of content skills that are taught and recorded as "mastered."

Course Objectives include (but are not limited to):

  • Apply inquiry-based and problem-solving processes and skills to scientific investigations.
  • Distinguish among the characteristics of botanical organization, structure, and function.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of plant reproduction.
  • Draw conclusions about the factors that affect the adaptation and survival of plants.
  • Relate an understanding of plant genetics to its uses in modern living.
