The University of Mississippi-Tupelo campus awards a number of Robert D. Oesterling Academic Excellence Scholarships each year to entering graduate and undergraduate students who do not meet the requirements for Mississippi residency.
In 2002, this academic excellence scholarship was developed and named for the former UM Division of Outreach and Continuing Studies Director Robert D. Oesterling who oversaw the off-campus sites in Tupelo and Southaven for over 20 years.
It is offered only at the University of Mississippi- Tupelo, Booneville, and Southaven campuses to cover the portion of tuition that is charged to out-of-state students above the cost of resident tuition. The scholarship is offered to students who live in a county that borders the state of Mississippi.
To be eligible for this academic excellence scholarship a student interested in graduate study must hold no less than a 3.2 Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) from their undergraduate degree-granting institution. A student transferring into a bachelor's degree program at UM-Tupelo must possess a 3.0 or higher GPA from their transferring community college or university. There is currently no stipulation on the number of hours the student must in enroll in to receive the scholarship.
