Master of Arts - TESOL GOAL: Students completing the M.A. program in TESOL are trained to become highly qualified professionals in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages.

DEADLINE: Selection for admission to the program occurs three times a year as stated in the scheduled below:

Admission Requirements

A) Students applying to the Master of Arts program in TESOL should submit the following materials to The Graduate School, The University of Mississippi, University, MS 38677:

  • A complete Graduate College application for admission
  • One official transcript from each university/college attended A $25 application fee (Mississippi residents exempt)
  • Official test scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
  • International students must also submit official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores (a score of 550 or above is preferred for full admission, 213 for computer-based, and 80 for the internet-based tests)

B) International students only: A financial statement which certifies funds for educational and living expenses should be submitted to International Program Office, University of Mississippi, University, MS 38677. For more information, please refer to the website of International Program Office

C) The following supporting materials should be sent directly to Dr. Esim Erdim-Payne, TESOL Program, University of Mississippi, University, MS 38677:

  • Curriculum vita
  • A statement of purpose and a summary of teaching, second or foreign language study, and travel or work abroad, and any other relevant information
  • Three academic letters of recommendation International students: Evidence of oral proficiency in English in the form of TSE scores or a tape recording containing - spontaneous speech samples (e.g. telling us about yourself, about your plans for the future, etc.), and three samples of oral reading from text.

PROGRAM: The M.A. in TESOL is offered with thesis and non-thesis options, both totaling 36 hours.

I Professional Core (9 hours or 3 classes)
EDCI 602 Curriculum Construction
EDRS 605 Educational Research I

Additional 3 hours from the areas of curriculum, TESOL, Philosophy, sociology, history, psychology, research, statistics, or an appropriate foundation from either inside or outside the School of Education. A student who chooses the thesis option automatically fulfills this three-hour requirement.

II Specialization Core
(15 hours or 5 classes)
EDCI 542 Teaching English as a Foreign Language
EDCI 645 Practicum in TESOL I
EDCI 647 Cultural Dimensions of Second Language Acquisition
EDCI 631 Testing and Assessment in Second Language Acquisition
EDCI 695 Seminar in Second Language Acquisition

III Linguistics (12 hours or 4 classes)
The following areas must be represented: linguistics, sociolinguistics, and first language acquisition.
ENGL 501 Descriptive Grammar
ENGL 502 Historical Linguistics
ENGL 503 History of the English Language
ENGL 509 Semantics
ENGL 592 Modern English Grammar
ENGL 595 Seminar in Linguistics
MLLL 541 Special Topics in Linguistics

Total: 36 hours

IV Other requirements: three-hour comprehensive exam.
