Media Ethics in New Orleans

Students will:

  • Learn to look critically at not just news media, but at the political, corporate, and non-profit interests behind them and how they impact the way stories are covered
  • Visit sites such as the Launch Pad, The Lens, and other start-ups from the “Silicon Bayou,” as well as classrooms and courtrooms to better understand the role the city has played in addressing social issues
  • Meet and visit with media professionals, including well-known writers and civic leaders
  • Tour the recently completed $12 billion federal flood protection system
  • Experience several cultural outings, including traditional dining establishments and music venues

New Orleans, Louisiana

Who should go?

Students must have instructor’s approval to take this course. All majors are welcome, as there are no prerequisites for this course, but, specifically Journalism, IMC, African American studies, Criminal Justice, Public Policy Leadership, Sociology, Southern Studies, Business, Marketing, and Accounting majors may be interested.

Dates:

Students will travel to New Orleans January 3-8 then meet on the Oxford campus January 10-13.

Travel:

Students will make their own arrangements to and from New Orleans and meet with the group and instructor at a time and place pre-determined by the instructor. Group ground transportation will be provided while on site.

Costs:

Course fee is $875 plus tuition. Included in the course fee are housing, on-site group ground transportation, a group dinner, and tour fees. Excluded from the cost is the Study USA application fee, tuition, meals other than the group dinner, travel to New Orleans, and personal spending money. group dinner, travel to New Orleans, and personal spending money are excluded from the course fee.
