What?
- Learn basic methods of mapping and excavation at one of the largest prehistoric ceremonial centers in the Mississippi alluvial valley.
- Conduct lab processing of artifacts.
- Explore advanced archaeological techniques including specialized laboratory analyses, GIS, and remote sensing using magnetometry and ground penetrating radar (GPR).
- Visit the Delta Blues Museum which explores the legendary music of artists such as B. B. King, Muddy Waters, Big Mama Thornton, and Son Thomas.
Where?
Students will spend two weeks in the Mississippi Delta. Accommodations will be provided in a large house with kitchen facilities sponsored by The Center for Archaeological Research on the Carson Mounds site near the city of Clarksdale, the “birthplace of the Blues” and childhood home of writer Tennessee Williams.
Who?
Undergraduate or graduate students from the University of Mississippi or other institutions who are interested in learning about bioarchaeology. No prior archaeological experience is necessary.
When?
The program dates are January 5 – 20, 2009.
How?
Ground transportation to and from Clarksdale from the University of Mississippi will be provided.
How much?
Program cost is $940. Included in the cost are tuition, housing, transportation to and from Oxford, and optional weekend fieldtrips to local archaeological sites. Excluded from the cost are the Study USA application fee, meals, and personal spending money.
