- Visit the NIH Institute on Aging and learn about the role of chemistry in treating disease associated with aging
- Discover how the oceans are providing materials and medicines for the future at the Center of Marine Biotechnology
- Learn about the role of museums in creating a science-literate society at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History
- Discuss science funding and research policy with Congressional leaders
- Meet with researchers at the Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University.
- Visit the campus of the National Institutes of Health and learn about collaboration and internship opportunities at the NIH
- Visit the National Library of Medicine and view the history of medicine in the US.
In addition to time on The University of Mississippi campus, students will spend five nights in the Baltimore\Washington, DC area. Students can visit the attractions of the Inner Harbor, a waterfront area surrounded by historic neighborhoods in Baltimore. Baltimore is also the home to the Babe Ruth Museum, the American Visionary Art Museum and the Baltimore Orioles. Washington, DC offerings include the museums of the Smithsonian Institution, the U.S. Capitol, the White House, and many other sites of national and historical importance.
This program is for Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology, and Pharmacy majors, and for any other student interested in learning about the workings of biomedical science in the context of private and government agencies. Students must have successfully completed CHEM 222 and 226.
An orientation session will be held in April in Oxford. Students will spend five nights in the Baltimore/Washington, DC area from May 13-18, 2012. Students will then spend May 21-25 on the Oxford campus for follow-up discussions and lectures, with a final research proposal due on May 26.
Students will make their own air travel arrangements to and from the Baltimore/Washington, DC area. Group ground transportation will be provided. Shared accommodations will be provided..
Program cost is $1995 for resident and $2295 for non-resident students. Included in the cost are tuition, housing, group ground transportation, a group dinner, museum admissions and tours. Excluded from the cost are the Study USA application fee, meals, airfare, airport transfers, and personal spending money.
