Vanessa earned her BA in International Studies and Journalism from The University of Mississippi in August 2002. While on campus she was in the Honors College and served on the staff of the Daily Mississippian as a Copy Editor. She studied abroad on a short program in Asia (Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong) in March 2000 through one of her classes in the Croft Institute for International Studies. She followed that trip with a 6-month stay in a rural village in Namibia during Spring 2001, where she lived with a host family and studied nation-building and globalization.

Other general info
I dabble in photography and love thrift and market shopping everywhere I go.
My favorite place in the world is …
An open field anywhere, though some of my favorites are in Namibia and South Africa.
Aisle, window, or middle seat?
Always, always a window

Best travel tip:
Bring a small bag inside your checked luggage. That way you have more room for souvenirs when you return from your trip. Also, take some clothes you’re not completely in love with to wear on travel days. Then wash them and donate them before you return home for more souvenir space.
What I consider a travel emergency:
Running late for the airport … I’m always nearly missing a flight.
Biggest cultural hurdle:
Language has always been difficult for me.
I think you should go abroad because …
Every time we step out of our comfort zone we become stronger. Stepping into a new culture can strengthen your independence while helping you see the world from a new perspective.
