Child Welfare and Social Change in South Africa

Students enrolling in this program will take two courses for a total of 6 credit hours.
The Child Welfare course will allow students to explore child welfare policy and practice in South Africa through site visits and lectures in Cape Town. The course, taught by UM faculty member Kim Shackelford, will compare the South African system to that of the United States regarding situations that put children at risk of abuse and neglect. Students will earn 3 hours of credit for SW 498.
The Social Change course will examine the social change in Cape Town, South Africa following the end of Apartheid and the establishment of a democratic government. UM faculty member Dr. Susan Allen will also help students explore the social development model as a means of creating change in communities and individuals, using Cape Town, South Africa, as a lab.
