The Sonnet

The sonnet is perhaps the most famous and successful verse form in the history of literature. This program, led by UM faculty-member Gregory Heyworth, will follow the evolution of the sonnet, its forms, arguments, conceits, and tropes, from the late Middle Ages, through the Renaissance, with a final glance ahead to modern practitioners. Students will earn 3 hours of credit for ENGL 397.

Program Highlights

  • This program is open to all students but would be particularly interesting to English majors.
  • “ Dr. Heyworth challenged us to delve into the reading and find what the selected authors were saying as well as why they chose the literary tools they used. He helped us to see the deeper meaning behind the way the authors wrote, making the works much more appreciable.” – Summer 2006 student
