Philosophy, Religion, and Science in London

The story of the rise of modern science cannot be told without understanding the on-going relationship between science, philosophy, and religion. Follow the ideas of British thinkers, namely Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin, as you ask questions like: How did the religious worldview influence the development of modern science? How did advances in science alter the religious worldview? What is the relationship between the two worldviews? The course, taught by UM faculty member William Lawhead, will take students to key sites in London related to these questions. Students will earn 3 hours of credit for PHIL 360 or REL 360.

Program Highlights

  • This program is open to all majors.
  • “ Philosophy discussed at the 'scene of the crime' is so much more rich than anything in the class room. Philosophy that would seem so distant when studied at home becomes alive and vital in its historical and geographical setting.” – Rachel Ables, Summer 2006 student.
