Japanese Language Initiative

The Department of Modern Languages and the Study Abroad Office at The University of Mississippi will continue a program during the upcoming academic year that started with the 2007 German Language Initiative. The program is structured so that students may complete a minor in 1.5 years and 10 participants will be granted scholarships for 12 hours of the coursework. Prior Japanese language experience is not required, but students must agree to complete a minor in Japanese in order to be considered for the scholarship.

Preference will be given to rising freshmen, but students who are currently enrolled at UM may also apply to the program if they have not declared a minor. In order to satisfy the minor requirements of 15 hours beyond the 100-level within 1.5 years, students will begin coursework in Summer 2009.

Ten scholarships will be awarded for the cost of tuition for the 4-week on-campus summer course, a summer session study abroad experience following the first year, and be given special consideration for scholarship funds to be used toward a semester exchange program sponsored by The University of Mississippi.* Scholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of financial need and academic record. Deadline to apply for the program is March 1.
