Freshman Year Abroad at The University of Edinburgh

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I still be considered a UM student while I’m in Edinburgh?

Yes!  You will receive UM resident credit for all courses taken at the University of Edinburgh.

If I enroll in this program can I study abroad again at a later date?

Absolutely!  In fact, we encourage it.

Is this program limited to particular majors?

No.  The University of Edinburgh has a diverse range of academic disciplines, from Mathematics, Engineering, GeoSciences, and Biological Sciences to History, English/Literature, Modern Languages, Economics and Business.

What courses are available at the University of Edinburgh?

Courses and course descriptions are listed at: http://www.ed.ac.uk/studying/visitingstudent/

How are course at the University of Edinburgh graded?

You will be graded on an ABCDF scale and your grades will count toward your cumulative GPA at Ole Miss.

How will the credits taken in Edinburgh transfer?

During a typical semester at the University of Edinburgh, a student will take 3 courses, each of which is worth 20 credits.  You will receive 5 hours of credit at Ole Miss for every 20 credit course taken at the University of Edinburgh.  So, during a typical semester at UE, a student will receive 15 credit hours at Ole Miss.  The student will meet with an academic advisor from his or her school to determine exact course equivalents for these 15 credit hours.

How many students are selected for this program?

There is not a pre-set limit on the number of students who are selected for the program.

Will I be behind in my academic program when I return to campus?

In terms of hours, no.  A typical year at the University of Edinburgh will allow a UM student to earn 30 credit hours, which is comparable to a typical freshman course load at UM.  However, because of the difference in the way academic credit hours are distributed (one 20 credit course at Edinburgh = 5 credit hours at UM), a student might find it difficult to find 10 exact course equivalents at UM that will count for his or her major.  This will be determined by academic advisors at the University of Mississippi.

Is financial aid available?

Yes.  Because you will receive resident credit at UM for all courses taken at the University of Edinburgh, most scholarships and financial aid WILL APPLY toward the cost of the Freshman Year Abroad program.  Additional need-based Study Abroad scholarships are also awarded every semester, and Freshman Year Abroad participants are encouraged to apply.  Applications for Study Abroad Scholarships for Freshman Year Abroad participants should be mailed to the University of Mississippi Office of Study Abroad no later than the Freshman Year Abroad application deadline of March 1.

When is the application due?

March 1, 2008

Certainly.  You will get 3-4 weeks off at Christmas and another 3-4 weeks off for Easter Break in March-April.  You may do whatever you like during this time off: return home or stay and travel all over the UK and Europe - a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Will the total for the year be approximately $40,000?

A fair estimate is $40,000 - $50,000. The actual cost will depend on the exchange rate at the time. When calculating the cost of the program, keep in mind that coursework taken at the University of Edinburgh will be considered resident credit at UM, so most academic scholarships and financial aid will apply.

How many meals are paid for while in Scotland?

You will be able to choose a meal plan that will range from 10 meals per week (2 per day, 5 days a week) to 14 meals per week.  Also, you may have the option of living in "self-catered" accommodation, which means that you will be responsible for all meals.  In this case, the cost will depend on your eating habits.

Will there be any Freshman Year Abroad tours with the other Freshman Year Abroad students while in Scotland?

The International Office at the University of Edinburgh offers guided tours of the campus, as well as historical tours and shopping tours of the city during “Freshers’ Week.”  Freshers’ Week is an orientation/introduction week filled with social opportunities and practical information sessions organized by the University of Edinburgh International Office to prepare international students for their time in Edinburgh.  Beyond these tours, students are encouraged to travel as much or as little as they desire.
