The benefits of Study Abroad

"These classes made me learn a lot about myself and just how far I can push myself. It's definitely one of the best expereiences I've ever had!"

"Take advantage of every opportunity. You are only there for a couple of weeks and time flies so be sure and don't waste a minute!"

"The different professors who lectured were amazing and really gave us a complete picture of the music and culture of the African diaspora and its implications today."

Students who have been abroad or are considering a Study Abroad Course can easily pinpoint why the experience is beneficial. If not for the opportunity to discover oneself and gain a new level of independence, then to gain fluency in a language or make their resume more competitive when applying for jobs or graduate school.

Sometimes it's more difficult for faculty members or departments to easily identify how Study Abroad can be beneficial to them.

Certainly, like your students, Study Abroad is a great opportunity to visit a new or favorite part of the world. It increases your sense of adventure and, unlike students, you get paid to do it. However, there are some deeper and more tangible ways Study Abroad can benefit you.

  1. You get to select subject matter and location so the program can be tailored to your interests or professional research.
  2. A successful program can also build your resume, giving you opportunities for promotion and tenure.
  3. Students within your department can leave the University with an extra gold star on their resume that you helped them earn.
  4. Showing prospective and current students that they can take major courses while abroad is a great way to recruit and retain students.
  5. While abroad you can network with international colleagues and leading professionals in your field.
  6. The beach is never a bad place to spend your winter ... or summer.
