For Faculty
Role of Ole Miss Study Abroad and the Assistant to the Provost for Outreach
The primary function of Ole Miss Study Abroad is to enable our students to
study in other countries through safe, affordable, and academically strong
programs. We encourage students to participate in our own and our partnered
programs whenever possible, but we also assist students in making sure they
will receive academic credit from programs offered elsewhere. We continue
to develop and seek out programs that fit our students’ needs.
We are involved with our students from their initial advising session through their study abroad program
and upon their return. We continue to try to have clear and concise information available for our
students and their parents -- quite a challenge since every program is unique.
Our goal is to have a study abroad program suitable to any student whose academics
are strong enough for study abroad. We hope to offer courses that our
students need and to offer prices that are affordable.
We at the Study Abroad Office would like to hear your ideas for a dream program. Study Abroad
offers another dimension to academic study through the people, museums, and natural resources of another
country. The world becomes a living laboratory in which to study culture, environment, and
history. Lectures are enriched through immersion.
Classes specially designed for particular areas can be developed; most departments have “topics”
courses that can be used to award credit. We also encourage faculty to help us find guest lecturers at
foreign universities or laboratories to enhance our courses by adding other voices and different points of
view. The Study Abroad Office has access to providers who can help develop study abroad programs all
over the world. Together, we can secure accommodations, develop excursions, engage guest lecturers, and
design a curriculum. All we need is your ideas and enthusiasm!
Archaeology in the caves of Belize... American writers in Paris ... practice teaching in British
elementary schools... Latin American literature in Costa Rica... these are all University of Mississippi
faculty-developed study abroad programs being offering through the Study Abroad Office at Ole Miss in 2005.
Our new academic calendar with intersessions in January, May, and August offer faculty interested in study
abroad an excellent opportunity to teach overseas and students another exciting chance to study abroad.
UM students have shown great enthusiasm for short-term programs; many even choose to participate in two
or more of these programs while here at Ole Miss. If there is a class you've always wanted to teach, maybe
in Prague, Sydney, Buenos Aires, or some other fantastic place, give us call. Now is the time to make it
happen.
