Based in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, a vibrant coastal city, this course will examine the major health issues and provide an overview of the public health systems in South Africa. The course will include visits to clinics, non-profit organizations, universities, and other relevant agencies. Topics include priority diseases in South Africa, health delivery, HIV/AIDS, women's health, environmental health, and many other relevant topics. The HIV/AIDS problem in South Africa will be thoroughly discussed while examining economic, cultural, medical, and political issues associated with the disease.
The course, taught by UM faculty member Dr. Allison Ford, is open to all students interested in South Africa or health care. Students will receive 3 hours of credit for ES 490/651, PRM 490/651, or HP490/651, all ABCDF-graded courses.
A passport is required for U.S. citizens traveling to South Africa. A visa is also required for semester or all-year study.
