Famous for its meandering streets, terraced houses and fado music, Coimbra is also known as Portugal's "Oxford," home to thirteenth century cathedrals, monasteries, and the oldest university in Portugal: the Universidade de Coimbra. With a population of approximately 100,000, Coimbra is located on Portugal's Costa de Prata, "Silver Coast," which offers a variety of beautiful beaches, charming towns, unspoiled villages, monuments, temples, castles, palaces, and museums. Lisbon, Portugal's capital, is only a 2.5 hour train ride, 125 miles south of Coimbra.
Advanced level: Portuguese language, History, Portuguese literature, Linguistics, and direct enrollment in one or two university courses in the faculties of Literature, History, Science and Technology, Economics, Psychology, and Education.
A passport is required for U.S. citizens traveling to Portugal. A visa is also required for semester and all-year study.
