Ole Miss Archaeology Fieldschool in Belize

Be part of an archaeological project in Belize, Central America!
The University of Mississippi Department of Sociology and Anthropology, in conjunction with Belize's Institute of Archaeology, will be conducting an archaeological fieldschool this summer in the Caves Branch Valley of Belize, Central America. Led by Dr. Gabriel Wrobel, the Ole Miss fieldschool will focus on several rock shelters and caves used for mortuary ritual by the ancient Maya. This research is one of several projects encompassed by the Belize Valley Archaeological Reconnaissance program (www.bvar.org).
- Learn archaeological excavation and survey techniques by participating directly in the on-going research at the sites
- Instruction in various aspects of laboratory analyses of ceramic, lithic, and osteological materials
- Four-week research program provides an opportunity for participants to experience ancient Maya archaeology in a hands-on, educational, and exciting jungle setting in Belize
REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum GPA of 2.50
- Due to the strenuous physical nature of excavation and the jungle environment, it is imperative that participants be in excellent physical condition
- Complete the basic Study Abroad application
- Students must schedule an interview with Dr. Wrobel before they can be considered for acceptance into the program
- Applications and the interview must be completed no later than April 12
ACADEMIC CREDIT
6 credit hours (Anthropology 390 and 391)
PROGRAM FEE INCLUDES

- Daily travel to and from the site
- Educational lectures and tours of other archaeological sites
- Airport pick up in Belize City

PASSPORTS AND VISAS
A
passport is required for U.S. citizens traveling to Belize. No visa is required for a short-term
stay.
