Advanced Standing RN-BSN Program

The Advanced Standing (RN-BSN) program option is designed for students who hold an associate's degree or diploma as a Registered Nurse. The purpose of this program is to prepare nurses for entry-level professional practice and provide a solid foundation for graduate study. Classes are delivered via on-line technology. Students may be asked to attend the DeSoto Center for course related activities during any semester.

Students admitted to the Advanced Standing RN-BSN program will enter in the summer semester of each year. The program can be completed in 3 semesters. The following is an example of the full-time plan of study. However, there are part-time plans of study available.

RN-BSN Application Process:

*Accepted applicants that complete their Associate Degree nursing program in the spring immediately prior to admission to the University of Mississippi School of Nursing RN-BSN program will be allowed to enroll in non-clinical courses in the first semester of the program (summer). Students must provide a copy of the current nursing license in order to enroll in the second semester (fall) courses and continue in the program.


Dual Option: RN-BSN-MSN

Another option available to RN students is the dual option: RN-BSN-MSN*. The purpose of this program is to give registered nurses who want to earn an advanced degree, an accelerated approach for acquiring a Master's Degree in Nursing. Currently, the DeSoto Center campus offers students the Nurse Educator program option. Educator courses are delivered via online technology. There are times when students may be asked to attend the DeSoto Center for course related activities during any semester.

* There are other program options available: practitioner (family/neonatal/ adult acute care) and health systems executive. However, at this time, these courses are ONLY offered at the Jackson campus. Although some classes are web enhanced, students enrolled in one of these programs are required to attend classes on the Jackson campus every other weekend. However, some clinical requirements may be completed in the DeSoto area based on availability.

Prerequisites for all programs:

* Prerequisites for the RN-BSN and RN-BSN-MSN programs may be completed through Northwest Mississippi Community College DeSoto Center http://northwestms.edu/. Students may apply to the program of choice up to 1 year in advance of desired enrollment, while taking prerequisites. However, ALL prerequisite courses* (63 semester hours) must be completed BEFORE entering into the RN-BSN or RN-BSN-MSN programs.


Master of Science in Nursing

Students who already hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) may apply for a Master's of Science in Nursing*. The purpose of the master's program is to prepare baccalaureate nurses for advanced practice and provide a solid foundation for doctoral study. Currently, the DeSoto Center campus offers students the Nurse Educator program option. Educator courses are delivered via online technology. There are times when students may be asked to attend the DeSoto Center for course related activities during any semester.

* There are other program options available: practitioner (family/neonatal/ adult acute care/psychiatric), executive, manager, or researcher tracks. However, at this time, these courses are ONLY offered at the Jackson campus. Although some classes are web enhanced, students enrolled in one of these programs are required to attend classes on the Jackson campus every other weekend. However, some clinical requirements may be completed in the DeSoto area based on availability.

Northwest Mississippi Community College
Associates Degree in Nursing
(Senatobia Campus)

For students interested in starting a career in nursing, Northwest Mississippi Community College offers a 2 year Associates Degree in Nursing on the Senatobia campus only. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the National Council for Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses.
