Community Enrichment classes on the UM-DeSoto campus are offered in the DeSoto Center unless otherwise noted. The DeSoto Center is located at 5197 W.E. Ross Parkway off Church Road in Southaven. This class is designed for both the novice and the experienced beader, progressing from a basic string of beads to complex designs with a focus on color and composition. Supplies included in registration fee.

Students will learn the traditional methods of cutting and putting together a stained glass window. Choose from 3 different patters and take home a finished 8 ½ x 11 piece. All of the tools will be supplied. Students that have already taken this class are welcome to come and work on perfecting their skills. These students will need to bring their tools (i.e., glass cutter, smoldering iron, breaker/grozier) with them. Former students will have different advanced patterns to choose from.

Create better photos and have more fun with your digital camera. This class, taught by Ole Miss photographer Robert Jordan, will cover camera techniques, composition, and lighting tips that will help you make the most of photo opportunities whether you are just starting out or have been making photos for years. Bring your enthusiasm, creative spirit and your camera.

This hands-on course will concentrate on fall and Christmas ideas for home decor, table centerpieces and wall decorations. A sharp knife, scissors and wire snips will be needed for this class. The flowers and containers will be supplied.

This course is a basic oil painting course for students of all levels of skill. The focus will be on drawing, color mixing, paint application, and value relationships. Students will paint in oil from life using still life set-ups, which will be provided. A supply list will be available upon registration.

For students that have already taken the beginning class, have fun designing your own jewelry using stained glass. Thin glass, streamers, frit, and some dichroic glass will be used for the jewelry. Mini kilns will be available for students to fire their jewelry. Part of the instruction includes viewing two videos on fusing glass. Supplies are included in the fee. Students must bring their glass cutter and breaker/grozier pliers from the beginning class with them.

This course will teach you to create a beautiful piece of jewelry for yourself or use as a gift as you learn the techniques to wrap different gemstones. Tools will be provided. This program is the nation’s first and largest refresher course for drivers age 50 and older that has helped millions of drivers remain safe on today’s roads. You can expect to learn about current rules of the road, how to operate your vehicle safely in today’s increasingly challenging environment, and some adjustments to common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. AARP membership not required and with completion of this course, participants 55 years or older will be entitled to receive a discount on their automobile insurance premiums for the following three years as mandated by Mississippi law.

This is a very BASIC LEVEL class. You will start off learning about the background of computers and will be shown the individual pieces that come together to make your home computer. You will be introduced to the basic fundamentals for starting your computer, loading programs and navigating your machine. This class is for people that are intimidated by the thought of using a computer and would like the knowledge to become functional. This class moves very slow and is intended for people who need a hands-on teacher to explain every detail.

This four-hour session will cover the four sections of the ACT- English grammar, mathematics, reading and science reasoning as taught through the ZAPS program. Through a combination of effective test taking strategies, a well-developed study guide, specific practice on sample ACT tests, and motivational instruction, students can expect to achieve an ACT score increase of 2-8 points.
