Community Enrichment classes on the UM-DeSoto campus are offered in the DeSoto Center unless otherwise noted. The DeSoto Center is located at 5197 W.E. Ross Parkway off Church Road in Southaven. This class is designed for both the novice and the experienced beader, progressing from a basic string of beads to complex designs with a focus on color and composition. Please supply your own beads. All other supplies included in registration fee. You may bring a snack, if desired.

Students will learn the traditional methods of cutting and putting together a stained glass window. Choose from 3 different patters and take home a finished 8 ½ x 11 piece. All of the tools will be supplied. Students that have already taken this class are welcome to come and work on perfecting their skills. These students will need to bring their tools (i.e., glass cutter, smoldering iron, breaker/grozier) with them. Former students will have different advanced patterns to choose from.

This class, taught by Ole Miss photographer Robert Jordan, will cover camera techniques, composition, and lighting tips that will help you make the most of photo opportunities whether you are just starting out or have been making photos for years. After a brief history of knitting, you will begin to learn the basic knit and purl stitches by knitting a sample which includes basic patterns and procedures. Then you will work on a simple first project. Also covered in class will be a glossary of knitting terms, symbols and abbreviations, some finishing nstructions and care of knitted items. This program is the nation’s first and largest refresher course for drivers age 50 and older
that has helped millions of drivers remain safe on today’s roads. You can expect to learn
about current rules of the road, how to operate your vehicle safely in today’s increasingly
challenging environment, and some adjustments to common age-related changes in vision,
hearing and reaction time. AARP membership not required and with completion of this
course, participants 55 years or older will be entitled to receive a discount on their
automobile insurance premiums for the following three years as mandated by Mississippi
law.

This 8‐hour course is designed for communications officers, 911 center supervisors and managers, public safety first responders, and emergency management personnel. It provides important information for maintaining communications during severe weather, communications center planning, resources, training, and information on types of severe weather. The topics include: (1) The National Weather Service, (2) Watches and Warnings, (3) Types of Severe Weather, (4) The Communications Center Before, During and After the Storm, (5) Weather Tools and Resources, (6) Weather Warning Methods, (7) ARES and SKYWARN as Resources, and (8) Lessons Learned. This class draws material from a wide range of sources including the National Weather Service, the American Radio Relay League, real life experiences from communications centers impacted by severe weather, currently available training resources, and computer tools that can be used in a communications center. The instructor for this class, Mike Corey, has a wide range of experience in the communications field, 5 years experience in a multi-agency 911 center, 3 years experience in university/college public safety, 20 years experience as an emergency management volunteer, and 15 years experience as a National Weather Service trained storm spotter.

This is a very BASIC LEVEL class. You will start off learning about the background of computers and will be shown the individual pieces that come together to make your home computer. This class is for people that are intimidated by the thought of using a computer and would like the knowledge to become functional. The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art offers an impressive selection of 19th and 20th century sculpture and decorative arts, including period furniture and textiles. The collection also includes a popular “global survey” of art: Ancient Greek and Mediterranean art, a collection from the Ancient Americas, and a survey of African art. Taylor Creek, Southern Living’s Mississippi Idea House, greets you with a wealth of features. This home was built at Plein Air, a new neighborhood in tranquil Taylor, Mississippi that feels as it’s been around for a long time. Inspired by Taylor’s active arts community, developers took its name from the practice of painting “en plein air”, or in the open air.
