SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - Trips to Rowan Oak, William Faulkner's home in Oxford, and to the Viking Cooking School, The Alluvian Hotel and other places in Greenwood are scheduled next month as part of the continuing education program at DeSoto Center in Southaven.
Dr. Bonnie Buntin, University of Mississippi dean at the center, said the excursions are the first area trips to be held through the program.
The Oxford day trip, which will include a guided tour of the home, will be March 6. The overnight Greenwood trip will be March 17-18.
Registration, including a $30 fee, must be received by March 3 for the Oxford trip. Registration and a $275 fee for the Greenwood trip must be received by Feb. 28.
The Oxford fee will include transportation, a meal and the tour.
The Greenwood fee will cover transportation, double occupancy lodging (single will be extra), four meals and all ticketed and cooking school fees.
People making the Rowan Oak visit will leave DeSoto Center at 10 a.m. March 6 and return about 4:30 p.m.
The Greenwood participants will leave the center at 9 a.m. on March 17 and return about 3:30 p.m. the next day.
The Oxford schedule includes lunch at the Downtown Grill on the city's square.
The travelers to Greenwood will stop for lunch at Crystal Grill and then will shop in the city's historic downtown district. The evening will include a gourmet cooking workshop and Italian dinner at the Viking school.
After spending the night at The Alluvian, the tour group will stop at both Peter's Pottery and McCarty's Pottery outside of Cleveland. Lunch will be at the Gallery restaurant operated by McCarty's co-owner Lee McCarty.
Ole Miss' DeSoto Center academic adviser, Sarah Thompson, will lead the Oxford group. Ashley Jones, Ole Miss student services coordinator at the center, and Rochelle Poole, university nursing educator, will lead the Greenwood group.
