When the leaders of Northwest Mississippi Community
College and The University of Mississippi decided
to partner in education at DeSoto Center, something
truly spectacular happened. Two institutions with
somewhat competing interests put those interests aside
in order to help Mississippians earn college degrees
and make better lives for themselves.
In this innovative academic collaboration, known
as the 2 + 2 Program, Northwest offers the
first two years of the academic curriculum and Ole
Miss provides the third and fourth years.
But the 2 + 2 Program offers more than a valuable
four-year college degree. It offers choice and flexibility,
benefiting both recent high school graduates and people
who would not be able to pursue a fouryear degree
through a traditional route.
Working students can choose from an array of morning,
afternoon, and evening classes. Full-time parents
can opt for the numerous online courses offered. People
seeking second-career options have an amazing variety
of academic and pre-professional majors that are convenient
and accessible.
Better education equals better careers equals a
growing and vital DeSoto County. And that benefits
everyone.

"This
endowment campaign might be a 'first' in the
nation between a community college and a four-year
university where resources are pooled and the
proceeds divided to help both institutions provide
scholarships for students. It provides flow-through
scholarship monies and establishes an endowment
for future scholarships.
"The Northwest- University
of Mississippi DeSoto County partnership has
provided students a wonderful facility and tremendous
faculty. The missing component has been endowed
scholarships to provide perpetual funding for
students to attend college in DeSoto County."
Robert C. Khayat, Chancellor
The University of Mississippi
