About Lifelong Learning

In collaboration with the Office of the Registrar, the Division of Outreach and Continuing Education’s Office of Professional Development and Lifelong Learning offers the UM Lifelong Learners Program, to senior students 65 years or older. Through this program, seniors may enroll in one academic course (up to 4 credit hours) that is being offered during the spring, fall or combined summer sessions tuition-free.* The Lifelong Learners attend class with University of Mississippi students on any UM campus.

* The Lifelong Learner Scholarship covers base tuition only for one course (up to 4 hours).

Sound a bit scary? It’s not! Lifelong Learners, faculty, and students alike love it—and it’s so easy!

Steps to becoming a UM Lifelong Learner:

  1. If taking undergraduate level courses†:  complete a University undergraduate application for admission at least 10 days prior to the beginning of the semester. Your major field of study will be “Undecided” unless you plan to pursue a degree. If you do not plan to pursue a degree, you will need to select “Non-Degree Seeking.” Transcripts and other documentation will be required, if you plan to pursue a degree. Please print and save the confirmation of your online application for your records.
  2. If you are attempting to take graduate-level courses†:  complete a University graduate application for admission at least 10 days prior to the beginning of the semester. Your major field of study will either be “Non-Degree Seeking” or select a Program of Study. Please print out and save the confirmation of your online application for your records. Transcripts and other documentation will be required.†
  3. If you are taking a class on the main campus, on the day classes begin, please go to the Registrar’s Office in 104 Martindale Student Services Center on All-American Drive to register for your class. If you are taking classes at one of the regional campuses, personnel at that specific campus will be available to assist you on the first day of classes.
  4. After registering for your class, you will need to secure a parking decal through the University of Mississippi’s Department of Parking and Transportation. There are several options. If you are taking classes at one of the regional campuses, personnel at that specific campus will be available to assist you with parking decals.
  5. If you wish to have your own UM Student ID, you may go to the Student ID Center located in the Center for Intelligence and Security Studies/Former Athletics’ Office Lobby, which is directly across the street from Martindale, and to the side of Turner Center, at your convenience. Your card will be active once you have registered for your class.

If you are a continuing Lifelong Learner, skip this step and go on to Step 3 below.

Online Learning

Online courses** operate synchronously–or in step–with the University’s academic calendar and include students from a variety of places and experiences who learn together in Web-based courses. The University of Mississippi offers excellent support services: access to web support specialists, electronic bulletin boards, e-mail accounts, library resources, and instructional guidance. We are committed to your success as a learner, and that means preserving as much as possible the complete classroom experience, even though the class is delivered in a different manner. Courses offered through Online Learning are fully accredited through the University of Mississippi.

Please note that the Lifelong Learner scholarship does not include online course fees. Also, enrollment is on a space available basis. After you have registered for class in the Registrar’s Office, you will be confirmed for the scholarship. You are now registered as an UM student and can attend class!

** In order to register for an online course, you must be in a degree-seeking program.
