The Division of Outreach and Continuing Education´s Center for Media Production has joined forces with the Telecommunications Department and the Student Media Center to bring a true public access channel to the Oxford area.
"We have a studio in Bishop Hall that we share with Student Media," said Andy Harper, director of Media Productions.
"We can certainly set people up over there in the studio and do just about any kind of show they want to do. I want to foster and present to people what is happening here in Oxford."
The Media Production staff has the facility, equipment, and experience to shoot, produce, and develop programming ideas on campus and eventually on location in the community. Known as "live to tape," Harper feels that nearly any idea brought to the table can be easily produced in the studio.
"One of the things that I am hoping to do now that we are up and going is to reach out to the academic departments and to the students and see if there are folks out there who would like to do this," Harper said.
"Oxford has an enormous artistic community, a very dynamic artistic community. I´m hoping that this channel can serve as an outlet for them to come in and give us shows they´ve produced on their own or to talk to us about helping them produce shows."
Channel 99 in the community cable line-up, and Channel 12 in the University cable line-up, serves as the local access channel. A collaborative effort with Vista III Media initiated further development of the channel. Harper is working through the legalities of naming the station OMTV (Ole Miss; Oxford, Miss.).
While viewers may be accustomed to finding Brown Bag Lectures and City Council meetings broadcast on OMTV, Harper hopes that recent agreements with the Research Channel and the Open Student Television Network will help provide programming 24 hours a day. Additionally, work is already in progress to create original programming and re-broadcast Ole Miss and community sports.
"This seemed like a natural thing to do," Harper said.
"To begin developing programming on campus and in the community that highlights and showcases the University, and to provide an Oxford Channel."
All programming ideas are welcome for proposal. While Harper says he doesn´t want to be the "content police," he is open to scheduling more mature programming for later in the evening.
"Bring us your ideas," Harper said.
"There are lots of people in this town I’d like to see on television. Think of the artists, writers and music that come to this town. Nobody is collecting that information. It is just a cool place to live and we need to be collecting all the coolness and putting it in a form that people can see."
