JumpStart KickOff is a program orientation that students are REQUIRED to attend before starting JumpStart. KickOff is held the same day as Move-In at 5:00 p.m. at Lamar Hall. During KickOff, students will learn about program expectations and the general schedule for JumpStart.
After KickOff, students will meet with their JumpStart Counselor and take a campus tour based on the student’s class schedules. The KickOff Dinner will take place in the Luckyday Residential College Dining Hall and will be catered by Taylor Grocery Special Events Catering.
The JumpStart KickOff is NOT the Ole Miss Freshmen Orientation, which is also REQUIRED before attending JumpStart.
SkillStart PLUS Sessions are REQUIRED sessions that serve to help acclimate students to student services and college life. SkillStart is a faculty/staff-led study skills session based on The A Game, a book by Dr. Kenneth Sufka. SkillStart will cover each chapter in the book and additional materials.
Sessions will be held everyday at 5:00 p.m. in Lamar Hall.
Presenters include University Police Department, Student Health Center, Financial Aid, Counseling Center, Greek Life, Student Organizations, and more.
Part of the program includes our student mentor component. Each week, JumpStart students will meet with their assigned JumpStart Counselor. Our counselors plan a variety of outings trips in and around Oxford and the Ole Miss campus.
Let’s face it, students will have to change the way or adjust their study habits for college classes. Professors don’t give out study guides for each test or ease up on deadlines for essays. Students have to be responsible for these types of things on their own.
In JumpStart, students are required to go to a proctored study hall on the 2nd floor of the J.D. Williams library for 5 hours each week (1-1.5 hours a day). Long after JumpStart, students will have formed a habit of scheduling study into their soon-to-be busy schedules.
In addition, students can attend tutoring sessions for study hall credit. JumpStart offers tutoring for a variety of courses, including college algebra, writing, history, etc.
