Instructor Information:
Louise Arizzoli teaches a variety of art history courses for the Art and Art History department at the University of Mississippi.

She received her PhD in Art History from Indiana University in 2013, with a specialization in the history of collections in America, as well as Renaissance and Baroque European Art. She also holds an MA in art history from Indiana University and an MA from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, with a focus on museum studies.

Prior to joining the University of Mississippi in the Spring of 2013, she was Acting Curator for Western Art before 1800 at the Indiana University Art Museum.

Course Description

This 16-lesson independent study course is a chronological and thematic survey of the art, architecture, and artifacts of world civilizations of the medieval through the modern eras. A variety of cultural issues, aesthetic styles, contextual perspectives, artists, and exemplary works of art will be examined and considered.

Course Objectives:

Objectives include (but are not limited to):

  1. developing an artistic vocabulary for critical thinking as relates to the visual arts
  2. understanding the processes by which art is produced
  3. evaluating the formal and expressive content of art
  4. learning proper historical perspectives for the original contexts of works of art
  5. introducing the fundamentals of connoisseurship, and facilitating the recognition of masterworks

Course Outline:

This course consists of 16 instructional modules, 1 final project, and 3 proctored examinations.

90 - 100% = A
80 - 89% = B
70 - 79% = C
60 - 69% = D
Below 59% = F

You must submit the lessons required to take the course exam(s). Lessons required but not submitted will receive a grade of zero. For the final exam, all coursework must be submitted and graded.
